Impossible things are happening every day….Sorry, can’t get that song out of my head!
Last night, the 2013 Tony® Award-winning Broadway musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, made it’s debut at the Fox Theatre here in Atlanta. My 6 year old was my date for the evening and she was right at home among several dozen little girls in dressed in their Cinderella dresses.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella is, for the most part, the classic love story we’ve all grown up with, inclusive of all of the story’s classic elements – mean stepmother, fairy godmother, pumpkin, Prince’s ball, and of course, the famous glass slipper. However, this is definitely a fresh new take on the classic story and you will be shocked by several surprising twists. I gave a little spoiler last night about the slipper, but it was literally all my neighboring show attendees could talk about during intermission!
I was impressed by the overall persona embodied in this version of Cinderella. More than just a pretty face with the right shoe size, this Cinderella is a contemporary figure living in a fairytale setting. She is a spirited young woman with savvy and soul who doesn’t let her rags or her gowns trip her up in her quest for kindness, compassion and forgiveness. She longs to escape the drudgery of her work at home and instead work to make the world a better place. She not only fights for her own dreams, butforces the prince to open his eyes to the world around him and realize his dreams too. It’s like Cinderella with a political agenda.
