What if I told you…I am actually not the biggest Black Friday shopper in my family? I’m not. In the past few years, my husband has become that so-called crazy Black Friday shopper you find camping out in line on Thanksgiving evening waiting for the rush of the doors opening (seriously!). It’s a pretty good deal for me actually because I get a good night’s sleep and wake up to having most of our holiday shopping done.
And he’s not alone. In fact, based on a recent survey conducted by Flipp, with Black Friday shoppers planning to spend $475 on average over the Black Friday/Cyber Monday time frame, men are expected to outspend women $570 to $385!
With that said, whether you’re sharing the Black Friday shopping with your spouse or older kids, it’s always a great idea to create a Black Friday budget and plan to keep everyone in control of their spending and ultimately, make the holiday much less stressful. One of the tools I use most is the Flipp app – the go-to app to help shoppers find the best deals and plan their Black Friday shopping strategy and trip.
Here are four tips to help you create a Black Friday budget for the whole family.
Create a list of needs and expenses
One of the reasons people tend to overspend on Black Friday (and the holidays in general) is because we don’t plan ahead. According to Flipp’s study, men are more likely to have picked out their Black Friday or Cyber Monday purchases in advance, while women are a bit more impulsive, leaving the decision making until Black Friday itself. The latter can get quite expensive. Start by making a list of all of the target items and gift recipients to search for on Black Friday. Don’t forget teachers’ gifts, secret Santa exchanges and possible hostess gifts that may arise in the upcoming weeks.
Research stores with deals
One really simple way to do this is through the Flipp app. The app lets you browse through hundreds of circulars in your area to find the best deals at every store – from electronics to household needs to food to holiday décor and much more! Best of all, as you find the deals and items on your shopping list on the app, you can easily just tap on them to save to your shopping list!
Find the best coupons out there
Although most people don’t think of Black Friday as a coupon-clipper’s holiday, many stores will offer additional coupons, savings, and rebates. Flipp lets you search through each of these beforehand and during your trip so you can be sure to target the very best deals out there.
Communicate with the family
Now to the most important part…Once you’ve browsed through the circulars, found the best deals, and created your shopping list, make sure your family is in on the plan!
The Flipp app lets you share it with someone in your family through its Family Sync feature. As items get checked off the list, you can see them in real time. This way, whomever you share it with – in my case, it’s my husband – you can both tag team on Black Friday, shop multiple stores for the best deals and conquer all of your Black Friday shopping while staying within budget.
Track your spending
Last but not least, no budget is effective without actually tracking your spending. Keep track of the items checked off of your Flipp shopping list, keep your receipts and record your final Black Friday spending to see where you stand for the rest of the season’s needs. Be sure to continue to check the Flipp app for updated deals, coupons and savings throughout the season!
Although we’re talking about Black Friday, I really do find the Flipp app is helpful for all of my shopping needs year round. Here’s an overview of how this free shopping app can help save you money:
- You can favorite your preferred retailers so that you can quickly access them to find the best deals in your area
- Search by brand, item or store with ease.
- Personalize your weekly shopping experiences by creating your own Shopping List, and the best part is that Flipp finds the best deals based on what’s on your list.
- Bonus: Said shopping list can also be shared thanks to the Family Sync feature to tag team on your shopping trip!
- Coupons you clip through the app can be loaded directly to your loyalty card and used at checkout or redeemed via rebate, and finally…
- The app also allows you to add your loyalty cards to keep them all in one place.
