Chiropractic care during pregnancy may seem like it would be really uncomfortable, but during this pregnancy, I have looked forward to nothing more than my Chiropractic adjustments. From the early pregnancy discomfort, to morning sickness symptoms, to back pain – these visits have been Godsend. You may think these are all just natural symptoms of pregnancy, but through regular chiropractic adjustments throughout your pregnancy, these symptoms may be greatly reduced.
Of course, I’m a Chiropractor’s wife aka “Chiro-wife,” so I’ll admit I am a little biased toward natural health remedies. However, what a lot of people don’t actually realize is that there are so many benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy. The biggest question is always, “Is it safe to go a chiropractor while pregnant?” I had this question too with my first pregnancy and my primary care physician actually recommended it. Similar to your primary care physician, a Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to treat pregnant women will follow your pregnancy week by week and employ the appropriate chiropractic techniques for each stage of your pregnancy.
Here are just a few benefits of Chiropractic Care during Pregnancy
- Helps control symptoms of pregnancy such as morning sickness symptoms (especially in early pregnancy)
- Reduction of labor and delivery time
- Relieves neck, joint and back pain associated with carrying a child (i.e. back labor)
- Helps maintain balance, which is usually thrown off by your growing belly
- Helps prevent a potential cesarean section delivery (due to breech pregnancies for example)
Dangers of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
Typically, most Chiropractors who have the right equipment and tables can provide regular chiropractic adjustments to pregnant women. However, for more specialized care, you should definitely do some research and find a Chiropractor who specializes in prenatal care. For example, there are Chiropractors who specialize in adjustments that alter fetal positions such as breech or posterior babies. I’ve known a few other chiro wives who have had such chiropractic techniques performed on them during pregnancies and wouldn’t you know it? They were able to have natural births.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I’ve been fortunate enough to have 2 healthy, natural births with minimal complications. My pregnancies have been pleasant for the most part and my full on labor and delivery for both babies were relatively quick. While I’ve also employed other healthy habits such as pregnancy exercises and healthy eating, I certainly believe that my regular chiropractic care during pregnancy has helped as well.
