I wanted to do something a little different this year, so I decided I would tap into my creative juices a little in coming up with DIY Christmas gift for my girls’ teachers, my husband’s patients and some of our friends. I found these really cute recipes from MomAdvice and got a chance to revisit my “soap-making space” for the first time in a long while. I think they were a hit!
The first recipe I put together was for Candy Cane Bath Salts. I thought this was super cute and simple to make. Most of the ingredients can be found between your local Walmart and craft store for pretty cheap. Check out the recipe below:
DIY Christmas Gift Idea #1: Candy Cane Bath Salts
Ingredients:
12 tall jelly canning jars with lid and rings (The recipe calls for 12 oz jars, but you can go with the 16 oz instead) – I preferred the crystal Ball jars since they didn’t have the Ball logo on them and just look a little classier.
2 bags of Epsom Salts, 4 pounds each (approximately 16 cups) 4 lb kosher salt (approximately 6 cups)
1⁄2 teaspoon glycerin, divided. Get this from your local drug store near the skin products
16 drops lavender essential oil (or any scent you prefer) You should find these in either a natural foods market or a craft store.
15 drops red colorant
Empty one bag of Epsom Salts into large mixing bowl. Add 3 cups kosher salt, stir well. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon glycerin and eight drops of essential oil. Mix well. In second large mixing bowl, empty one bag of Epsom Salts, and add 3 cups kosher salt. Stir well. Add 1/4 teaspoon glycerin, eight drops of essential oil, and red colorant. Stir until completely blended. Color should be even. Using a 1/2 cup measuring cup and fill canning jars at an angle, layer salts in jars, alternating white and colored mixtures.
Now, for the final festive product, you can print up these lovely gift tags and attach them along with a ribbon to the jar. You can either punch a hole in the tag and tie around jar, or you can take a shortcut as I did and just print them on label paper and stick to the jar. Here’s what it’ll look like in the end. What do you think?

What a great DIY gift! I love handmade gifts that don’t break the bank. And I’m ALWAYS up for something that encourages pampering yourself!
I use epsom salt baths relaxing and for lowering fevers! Works great. Baths are completely therapeutic as well. Epsom Salts which can be purchased in large inexpensive bags at the drug store aid in achy muscles, and paired with vibrant scented oils create a home spa on-the-cheap.
