The Hidden Treasures of Zoo Atlanta
We’ve been to Zoo Atlanta many times, from school field trips to just family time on the weekends. We look forward to experiencing something new each time! I recently visited Zoo Atlanta with my girls for a tour of the attractions, followed by a little playtime at their super fun outdoor rides and attractions such as the rock wall and the endangered species carousel. My girls always have the time of their lives on the Treetop Trail, but ran out of time this visit.
I also had a chance to learn about the many other hidden treasures and experiences Zoo Atlanta has to offer. From the exquisite Bird Watch to interactive classrooms, it’s definitely an option to explore with the whole family yea-round.
10 Must -Try Family Experiences at Zoo Atlanta
Keeper For a Day
Want to know what it’s like to be a real zookeeper? At Zoo Atlanta, you can get involved with the “Keeper for a Day” program. Here, you’ll learn how to take care of wild animals firsthand. This program is great for any teen or adult who doesn’t mind getting up close and personal with other animals. You can participate in exciting and unforgettable experiences such as feeding tigers, holding owls, and cleaning up enclosures. The animals and staff members will truly thank you!
NightCrawler Family and NightCrawler Schools and Groups
Just because the sun sets doesn’t mean the fun is over. You can participate in an exclusive NightCrawlers event with your family, or you can sign your child up for an exciting NightCrawlers field trip! This is a great way to experience living with wild animals firsthand. At night, the zookeepers go through many rituals to put the animals to sleep and make sure they are well fed. You can embark on this adventure to see what Zoo Atlanta is like behind the scenes! This event typically lasts from 6 p.m. until the following morning. A professional guide will inform you about the various ways the animals act at night time!
Nature Play Club
Your children will enjoy getting a hands-on learning experience through Nature Play Club, where a professional guide will engage your kids in a variety of nature-filled activities and learning opportunities! You can watch as your child learns important facts about plants and animals by experiencing it with their own eyes, rather than having to read about it through a textbook. This is a multi-park excursion through Zoo Atlanta and Grant Park to give your children a chance to learn about the wide variety of ecosystems that exist in nature. Plus, they can build their own animal shelter and learn how to survive from the real pros!
Volunteer Programs
Zoo Atlanta thrives on its programs, where volunteers can learn about how to take care of endangered species and play a vital role in conserving and saving species of all kinds. Not only is this a great opportunity for yourself and your children to meet new people and gain professional skills, but you can feel good knowing that your efforts and hard work are going towards an invaluable cause. By volunteering, you are demonstrating to Zoo Atlanta and to your community that you have a passion for saving the natural world and you want to make a difference that can be heard across the globe.
Bird Watch
The Bird Watch program is one of the newest programs at Zoo Atlanta, and it’s filled with exciting opportunities to get up close and personal with a variety of beautiful bird species, as well as learn more about their conservation and protection. You can register online for Bird Watch, which takes place about once a month across a number of dates. If you love birds, and you want to learn more about the unique challenges that birds face in your local area and abroad, you can take advantage of this opportunity that can’t be found anywhere else in Atlanta. Although you will be attended by a guide, you can take the reins by identifying birds on your own and pointing them out to your family and friends. It’s a thrilling and life-changing experience!

I would love to take my grandchildren to the Zoo Atlanta! I love that there are interactive classes and other awesome activities that go beyond just watching animals in their enclosures.
We LOVE the Atlanta Zoo. We go there every chance we can get. It’s a great way to spend time as a family. We’ve been going for years.
So many great experiences. My girls would love to do the Keeper for a day. Might have to think that one over for a birthday gift for them.
Zoos to me are an amazing experience. We love taking the kids on occasion. Interactive classes are cool for the kids to learn something about animals that aren’t indigenous to our areas. I think it’s awesome that Zoo Atlanta does these.
I love to bird watch at our local zoo. I think going to the zoo is the best outdoor outing for the whole family. It’s such a pretty place to see and do things.
We enjoy visiting the zoo and are long overdue for a trip! I think my children would especially love to attend a NightCrawlers event.
