Strange things people say to pregnant women

11/09/11 | just my thoughts

seriously caption

This pregnancy has really brought to my attention a slew of strange things people say to pregnant women.  I just came across a hilarious article about what not to say to pregnant women.  The article starts off with what I have to agree is one of the oddest questions people love to ask, “was this pregnancy planned?” Now, I seem to get that question and I constantly wonder what the logic behind that is. I mean, I’m a married woman, so it’s not like I’m exactly high risk for random slip ups. But then I only have one other child who’s a pretty appropriate distance in age. Besides, the sheer element of randomness surrounding the question, it always forces me to go into the whole “Well, we weren’t trying, but we weren’t not trying either” discussion which just sort of offers a mezzanine seat into our sex lives and birth control planning. That’s right along up there with the lady in the article whose boss asked her if she was panning on keeping her baby. ODD!

But I have to say, my pregnancies have brought about quite a few odd comments. Top of the list would have to be when I was pregnant with #1 and one of my sales reps remarked “Tell your husband I knew he could do it!” (Slowly lift your jaw off the ground). Umm…how does one respond to that?

More recently, prior to my announcing my second pregnancy, I sat in on a discussion with a 22 y/o intern who gratuitously spewed out her feelings on why she does not want to have kids. I seriously could have done without her including the “fact” that pregnant women are just the most hideous creatures and baby bumps are disgusting abnormalities that they should make more of an effort to keep hidden. Well…thanks for sharing…NOT!

Fortunately, I’m not the most sensitive person when it comes to comments about my pregnancy, but some things people say really do make you wonder. What were some of the strangest things you were asked/told during pregnancy?

    Wow, I am soooo rotfl!

I know that people were very surprised that we had our first two so close together and asked us if we planned that. Actually we did! Both of us had quite a bit of distance between us and our siblings, and we wanted our firstborn to have a playmate that was close in age.

Yes, this does leave the door open for a host of other questions and inferences, but, oh well, what’s done is done.

    rotfl!! smh
