Guest Post: 5 Ways I Created A Less Toxic Home

02/21/21 | Tips for Moms

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Chapes-JPL in Atlanta, GA.

It has been a few years since I started out with our less toxic lifestyle and it has definitely been a rocky road. Unfortunately, a lot of the time, people think that I am going nuts by adapting to a non-toxic or less toxic lifestyle, but for me, the changes are apparent – and they are great. Since we created a less toxic home, I feel healthier than ever and I would recommend it to every single person – especially those with children. I feel proud knowing that my kids will live in a home that is healthier and not fueled by toxic products that might harm their immune system, reproductive system, or induce illness such as cancers down the road. But, like I said, it hasn’t been the easiest process and when I first started creating a less toxic home, I was lost. If you are in that same boat, here are a few ways I created a less toxic home and it’s a good starting place for you:

List out all products that you need to replace + find replacements

Are you lost when it comes to starting a less toxic lifestyle? Start here! In order to live a lifestyle that is less toxic, you need to know what you are actually using. Read up on the ingredients in the products that you use each day and find a platform to search on to find if they are safe, such as EWG. If you have children in the home, start with their products. Then, move to your laundry products, your personal toiletry products, and go from there. Once you create your list of items that you need to replace, find replacements! Once again, EWG is a great resource for you! But, also Instagram and Google can be great benefits. When you do purchase new products, just make sure not to fall for greenwashing and actually research the ingredients before hitting “buy.” A few of my favorite non-toxic companies: Primally Pure, Branch Basics, Humble Suds, Risewell, Parasol, Welch Candle Co., Earth Mama, and a high-quality essential oil brand.

Cancel weed and pest control services

Most of us know that pesticides and herbicides are bad for us, but weed services and pest control services have become so normal in most households and a lot of people do not connect the dots that weed and pest control is herbicide and pesticide usage…and it is literally too close to home for me. We cancelled all of that when I found out that I was pregnant…and I wish I would have done it before then, but the more you know, right? Definitely research the dangers of herbicides and pesticides and I bet you’ll want to cancel your plans, too!

Stock the fridge with organic foods & look into water filtration

We focus on high-quality, organic foods because once again – I’m trying to reduce our herbicide and pesticide exposure. In addition to stocking the fridge with healthier, organic options, make sure to also look into water filtration. You can look up your water “report” online to figure out exactly what is in your city water and what they “purify” the water with before it reaches your home. Once finding out how bad my water quality was, I invested in a water filtration system. There are a lot out there, but I personally went with a Berkey filtration system and it has treated us well. There has been some talk about Berkey systems not filtering out all contaminants, so once again – research, but I am happy with our purchase, and I can definitely taste the difference in my water.

Declutter for mental health

Toxins do not only come from the products you are using. You can become toxic on your own by being way too stressed, not getting enough sleep, or staying in a poor mental state. Prioritize sleep, drink enough water, and make sure to de-stress. One way that I reduce my stress load is by decluttering on a regular basis and getting rid of what I do not use or need. This sounds like such a small task, but it really helps me with my stress load. If you are decluttering and run into high-priced items that you could sell, check out Atlanta GA pawn shop, Chapes-JPL. I know, I know. A lot of people get nervous when they hear “pawn shop,” but let me be clear: they are not your run of the mill, everyday pawn shop. They are the nation’s premier jewelry lender, give the lowest rates possible, and give fair prices when it comes to your items. They have the experience (over 40+ years) and their reviews speak for themselves. They even give small business loans, which I thought was really cool! Chapes-JPL is not your average pawnbroker and they say, “Three minutes in our offices are all you will need to discover how we have truly raised the bar and set new competitive standards for the legitimate collateral lending industry.”

Focus on air quality

Air quality is everything when it comes to creating a less toxic home. Add in house plants, open windows, choose less toxic furniture, and get rid of artificial fragrance. This will keep your family healthier, which is so important!
