It’s pretty funny that I’m writing this post about biodegradable glitter when truth be told, I hate glitter. ? All of it. I hate it in my home, in my car, on my skin… you name it. It’s level of eco-unfriendliness (is that a word?) doesn’t help much either. Conventional glitter is made up of micro-plastics that is not good news for the environment, especially for our oceans, which are impacted with each of the many washes down the drain associated with glitter use.

So, while the thought of glitter raises a lot of contention for me, my kids think it’s the best thing in the world and the fuel that drives every party in their craft rooms. Just recently, I learned about biodegradable glitter which (while still banned from my home) does have some appeal for the simply fact that it’s environmentally friendly, yet still brings all the same fun (and a little contention) as conventional glitter. It’s available on Amazon.com, as well as a few craft stores that may carry it.
That said, how about trying out some easy glitter crafts, only substituting conventional glitter for biodegradable glitter? Here are some fun ones to try!
Revamp your kid’s shoes using glitter
My kids love to add a little pizzazz to their shoes and adding glitter is a fun way to do that. If they have a pair that’s a little worn, but not
ready to let go of, adding some glitter could be a fun way to give those shoes a new lease on life. It’s cheap and fun and if you go with the biodegradable glitter instead, you can be certain that your up-cycling attempts are also friendly to the environment.
Create biodegradable glitter champagne flutes
I’ve actually tried out this glitter craft last year at our Savannah Bachelorette party and it was a hit! I have to say, if you are hosting any event and want your party to really stand out, try glitter champagne flutes. You could also use them as a gift to your Eco-conscious friends.
Glitter Mason Jars
If you love craft then you must try making bedazzled mason jars. They are fun and beautiful especially if you use them as décor or centerpieces for party tables.
Dazzle your office with biodegradable glitter office accessories.
Let’s be real. Offices can be boring. Do you sometimes look at your blank office walls or desk and long for Friday? Personalizing your workspace can make a good bit of difference. You can probably get away with revamping your mouse pad, thumbtacks or pencil cup. Take it a notch higher with eco-friendly glitter.
Create a glittery picture frame
Just imagine your favorite picture surrounded by environmentally friendly glitter. Beautiful, right? And super easy crafts for kids rooms!
Freshen up your morning with a bedazzled coffee cup
Custom coffee cups are always great gift ideas and easy DIY crafts. Using just a little bit of glitter, you can imprint a short message or inspirational quote. Plus, there’s much more reason to use the biodegradable glitter in this case since it’s going to be washed at some point, and even if you seal the glitter on it, there’s always the likelihood of some glitter coming off. This way, you won’t have to worry about micro plastics washing away into your drain.
