When #BetterMatters most… My 5 most memorable mobile moments of 2017

12/05/17 | Tips for Moms

As you guys know, I’ve been a Verizon partner since the middle of this year. In addition to getting a cool new Samsung Galaxy S8 and being part of an awesome new community of influencers, my partnership has really forced me to reflect on just how integral mobile technology really is in my life.  At the end of the day, the notion of living a “mobile lifestyle” means so much more than just the comfort and convenience of being just a call away from someone. More than the “coolness” of the gadgets. More than the fun of the app surfing, selfie filters, taking and sharing photos or keeping the world updated on social media.

As I said, this year has allowed me to reflect on how each of these seemingly simple mobile conveniences have managed to play a part in my life so integral to my family, my business, and most importantly, my sanity.  Here are just 5 of my most memorable mobile moments this year.

  1. The time I felt like I was failing at parenting

We’ve all been there, I know it.  It was my baby’s first field trip as a Kindergartner and I wanted more than anything to be there. But work and life wasn’t working in favor of me getting there. I was a complete wreck and literally called every parent I knew in her class asking them to look after her for me.  Between the pics, texts, Facetime moments, etc. I felt like I was there. More importantly, she felt like I was there.

2. The time I ROCKED Disney World.

Besides this being the time I took one of the coolest pics I’ve ever taken, this was also my first time utilizing the Disney Experience App at the park.  Why? I kid you not, it has never worked for me on another network!  The app gave me real time tips and the reminder to ride this safari at sunset for the best experience.

3. The time I felt ok with introducing my kids to technology.

Kids and technology have been a sore spot for me for many years. What are they watching, what are they being exposed to, etc.  Then it took one time of us being out in public, dealing with their “boredom” and me discovering how easy it was to share my Verizon hotspot with them and I gave in. Really, it just encouraged me to find more ways we can use this technology to for more positive experiences and learning, rather than focus on the downside of it all.  Check out more ways to protect younger kids in the age of technology.

4. The time officially added “Speaker/Presenter” to my resume.

This summer, I was asked to present at the Type A Conference in DC.  Long story short, what was initially supposed to be a panel, ended up being me…alone…on stage…in front of a room full of people!  I spent so much time researching my topic, putting my presentation together, recording myself speak, etc. all in the hallway of a DC hotel! I literally put every device I owned to work that weekend and the result was a huge success!  Again, that hotspot saved the day!

5. The time I became the coolest mom in school!

Yes, this year, I got to meet Rachel House…I mean, Gramma Tala from Moana!  Sure we interviewed several stars of Thor Ragnarok, but I had this one special request from Rachel House I knew I had to ask her in the 1 minute I’d get with her before she’d have to head to her next engagement.  And in that minute, I had my phone in hand and camera ready for her to record my daughters’ favorite line from the movie Moana! It was fun. Rachel was happy to do it. My kids play this clip over and over again so I feel like Rachel House is my new roommate.

❤ to Rachel House 4 taking a break from Topaz of #ThorRagnarok to make my girls’ day! It’s their fave line in #Moana! ?#ThorRagnarokEvent pic.twitter.com/ntA1BQpv7s

This is why I love technology so much! I know no matter where I am, I can capture those moments in my life where we all think, “Man, I wish I had my camera/camcorder!” I always do!

These ARE great memories. I’m so thankful that I can take a photo at a moments notice. When my kids were little photos were few and far between.

My favorite part about going into the new year, a time for reflection. This year I get to look back on a memorable trip to Ireland with my husband and fun and laughter with my girls.

There’s no doubt how much our phones have changed our lives! I love that I can easily bring it with me and leave my camera to capture moments when I’m out and about. So convenient!

Sounds like it has been a big year! I definitely know how it feels when it seems like you are failing at parenting. It is always comforting know that other moms feel the same way from time to time. That is amazing that you added speaker to your resume! That is a goal of mine, and I really need to hone my public speaking skills.

I love being a parent! There are so many times that mobile has helped me to connect with my husband and kids when I was not nearby.

While 2016 was a challenging year for me, 2017 was a smoother ride. Doors of opportunities opened up for me and I embraced the change with open arms. Technology has been beside me all along through the changes and learning experiences.

My mobile moment that I cannot forget is when I witnessed my 22 month old grandson unlock my phone, swiped the screen, tapped on the camera icon and started taking selfies. OMG. Kids nowadays are so tech savvy!
